How can I go about pitching an idea (invention) to a company without me having a patent?

It would be great if some patent lawyers could answer this question…in simple terms...
I assume that a patent is not required because it is not a new technology, but based on merging two existing technologies to serve a new demand/purpose. I am confident that this product is not on the market. However, I can't afford to research and file for a patent either.
